Public Outcry as Policemen Allegedly Assault Pregnant Woman Over Insurance Issue

By: Bayero Ade

A viral video of policemen allegedly assaulting a pregnant woman during the enforcement of third-party vehicle insurance regulations has sparked widespread outrage in Akwa Ibom State.

According to promptnews, The disturbing footage, widely shared on social media, reportedly shows officers from the Itam Police Division forcefully dragging the woman until she collapsed.

A Facebook user, Mayor Sylvester, who posted the video, strongly condemned the officers’ actions.

“This is what the Itam Police Station in Akwa Ibom State has turned third-party insurance enforcement into. They are behaving like animals. These are the kind of irresponsible characters recruited into the force. Imagine how a pregnant woman is being manhandled—I just hope her baby is still alive,” he wrote.

Sylvester further suggested that if the police were genuinely committed to enforcing third-party insurance, they should work with insurance companies by having their representatives stationed at checkpoints for immediate policy renewals.

Efforts to get a response from the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Bala Mohammed Azare, and the Command’s spokesperson, Tifon John, were unsuccessful, as calls and messages remained unanswered at the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, the incident attracted a large crowd of onlookers, many of whom expressed shock and condemnation over the police officers’ aggressive treatment of the pregnant woman.
