Power Tussle: Three killed, houses vandalised in Ikare Akoko, Ondo State

Three persons have been reported killed, and four injured in a communal clash in Ikare Akoko, Akoko Northeast council of Ondo State.

Several houses were also vandalised by the warring groups.

The clash was said to be between the Olukare of Ikare, Oba Akadiri Saliu Momoh, and Owa Ale of Ikare, Oba Adeleke Adedoyin.

The Olukare is regarded as a Class A monarch while the Owa Ale is reckoned to be in the Class C category.

Loyalty of residents in Ikare is divided between the two monarchs.

It was gathered that trouble started last weekend as the Olukare was about leading the celebration of the annual Ikare Day.

A source said residents of Okorun quarters of Ikare, in a bid to disrupt the celebration, attacked residents of Okoja quarters.

But another source said the Olukare wanted to shut the Osele market because of the celebration, and was resisted.

The source said, “Some people came to the market with canes to drive traders away because of the Ikare Day celebration but the traders resisted them.”

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has imposed a 24-hour curfew on the community, the second time such a restriction would be enforced in the town this year.

Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Donald Ojogo, said the curfew was imposed based on security reports and credible intelligence.

The commissioner confirmed some persons were killed in the conflict.
