The Nigeria Police Force has called for the suspension of the local government elections in Osun State due to potential security threats.
The election, scheduled for February 22, is expected to take place across 30 local government areas and 323 wards.
In a statement issued on Friday night, police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi warned that intelligence reports indicate plans by certain groups to cause unrest.
According to the police, some political and interest groups are mobilizing to disrupt public order, which could lead to violence.
Governor Ademola Adeleke had earlier assured that the election would be free and fair, urging all candidates to campaign peacefully.
However, the police have advised that, given the security situation, proceeding with the election could put lives and property at risk.
The police also referenced a recent Court of Appeal ruling that reportedly affects local government administration in Osun.
They argued that, beyond security concerns, the legal basis for the election remains uncertain.
To prevent violence and maintain order, the police urged the state government to postpone the election.
Security agencies have assured residents that measures are in place to protect the public, but they stressed that avoiding a crisis is the best course of action.
