Police Rescue Newborn Abandoned in FCT Bush, Arrest Mother

By: Bayero Ade

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued a newborn baby abandoned in a bush and apprehended the mother, who reportedly acted out of desperation after being abandoned by her partner.

According to Peoples Gazette, the Command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, disclosed in a statement on Sunday that officers recovered the day-old infant from a bush path near Crush Rock, behind an uncompleted Red Bricks Market in Mpape.

According to the statement, officers from the Mpape Division’s Juvenile and Women Care Section swiftly responded to a distress call around 10 a.m. on Friday. They found the baby wrapped in cloth and promptly took the infant to the Mpape Primary Health Care Centre, where medical evaluations confirmed the baby was in stable condition.

Following leads from the community, police apprehended the baby’s mother, identified as Khadija Ali. During interrogation, she admitted to abandoning the child, citing her inability to care for the baby after her husband left her.

The FCT Police Command announced that the rescued baby would be handed over to the Department of Social Welfare for proper care. Meanwhile, the mother will face prosecution under sections 14 and 16 of the Child Rights Act (CRA) 2003 once investigations are concluded.

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding vulnerable members of society and commended the public for their cooperation. It also urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to law enforcement authorities.
