The Rivers State Police Command on Tuesday dispelled the rumour that the private residence of the Minister of the federal capital territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike was attacked by irate protesters at Ada-George, in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
Report on some social media platforms went viral that the protesters stormed the sprawling residence and forced themselves in with the intention to loot the house.
When contacted, the police public relations officer, PPRO, Grace Iringe-Koko simply said “am not aware of such incident. Am very sure that nothing like that happened. But I will get back to you after my findings”.
Also dismissing the rumour, the national coordinator of Center for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, CBRPAC, Prince Wiro said there was no iota of truth in the story, adding that bloggers and social media platform owners should be careful with the kind of information they push out for public consumption especially during sensitive times like the one the country is in right now.
“That information is not correct. The protesters were actually coming from the Choba axis of the Ada-George road. When they got to the Minister Wike’s house, they stopped at the right lane of the road. The minister’s house is on the left lane. There was also a very heavy police presence there.
“What they did was that for the 15 minutes or so that they spent on that lane, they were reciting the former national anthem ‘Arise O’ Compatriots, Nigeria’s Call Obey” and raising green leaves to sky with unusual excitement.
“They did not spend more than fifteen minutes because there is no way they could have gain access to the premises with such heavy presence of armed policemen”.
Sources alleged that some of the business interests belonging to the Minister like the Hyper City, hotels have the presence of heavily armed security personnel on guard with Armored Personnel Carriers, APC, on display apparently to wade off any eventuality of infiltration by hoodlums.
