The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has directed an urgent investigation into the tragic boat accident that occurred on November 29, 2024, along the Dambo-Ebuchi waterways in Kogi State.
The incident, involving over 160 passengers, has resulted in the loss of many lives, with 24 survivors rescued and several others still missing.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP expressed deep condolences to the government and people of Kogi State, particularly those grieving the loss of their loved ones. He referred to the tragedy as a monumental loss and vowed to uncover the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The Force Marine Officer has been assigned to lead a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the tragedy and suggest measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
“The investigation will not only shed light on the incident but also help improve safety protocols and emergency response systems on the country’s waterways,” the statement read.
Search and rescue operations are currently underway, with the Nigeria Police Force working alongside other relevant agencies to locate the missing passengers.
The IGP reassured the public of the police’s determination to find those still unaccounted for and to ensure justice for the victims.
The police have also urged waterway operators, boat owners, and other stakeholders to cooperate with the Force Marine Department in implementing stricter safety regulations.
“Preventive measures are vital to safeguard passengers and operators on Nigeria’s waterways,” the IGP emphasized.
