The Ondo State Police Command has rejected claims circulating on social media that a vehicle in the convoy of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was responsible for the death of a young girl in Akure.
The First Lady was in Ondo for the launch of the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme, during which she distributed 10,000 medical kits, including Crocs and scrubs, to midwives across the South-West.
In response to reports published by some media outlets, the police described the allegations as completely false. DSP Olufunmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the spokesperson for the command, issued a statement clarifying the facts.
“The attention of the Ondo State Police Command has been drawn to an inaccurate and misleading report published by Sahara Reporters on April 17,” the statement said.
The report had claimed that a vehicle in the First Lady’s convoy was involved in the fatal incident. However, the police clarified that an eyewitness and initial investigations revealed that a white Lexus SUV, which did not have a number plate, was involved in the hit-and-run accident, not any vehicle associated with the First Lady.
The witness, who chased the fleeing vehicle immediately after the incident, corroborated this version of events. Several other witnesses, including the victim’s parents, also validated the report.
The police further corrected the age of the deceased, who was initially reported as nine years old. According to the child’s parents, she was actually seven years old. The police emphasized the importance of accurate reporting, especially in sensitive cases like this.
The Ondo State Commissioner of Police has visited the grieving family and assured them of a thorough investigation. “At no point was the First Lady’s convoy involved in this tragic event,” the police spokesperson reaffirmed.
