Police arrest man over N40,000 gambling on credit at bet9ja

Ogwuche Desmond, aged 29, was remanded by the Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Tuesday for purportedly wagering N40,000 on credit using the bet9ja platform.

Magistrate O.O. Otitoju instructed that the defendant be held in prison custody until May 10 for further examination of the case details and sentencing.

Desmond admitted guilt to the charge of obtaining under false pretences. The prosecutor, Courage Ekhueorohan, informed the court that the defendant allegedly committed the offense on April 23 at No 15 Bode Thomas St., Surulere Lagos.

Ekhueorohan said an employee at the bet9ja shop, Novah Jerry, had allowed the defendant to gamble after he promised to pay its worth of N40,000.

The prosecutor said the offence contravenes section 315 (1) (b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 and attracts 15 years’ imprisonment on conviction.
