Governors affiliated with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have denounced the recent Edo governorship election, labeling it a “rape of democracy.”
Furthermore, the PDP governors expressed concerns regarding the Ondo elections, stating, “We are currently reviewing documents that suggest the APC manipulated results after allegedly purchasing votes.”
The Vanguard reports that these statements were part of the resolutions made during an extraordinary session of the PDP Governors Forum (PDP-GF) held today in Jos, the capital of Plateau State.
Edo and Ondo Elections
The forum articulated its concerns, stating, “We are deeply troubled by the undermining of democratic principles in the Edo governorship elections. It is evident to anyone with a sense of justice that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) manipulated results to favor the APC candidate, despite the fact that the majority of legitimate votes were cast for the PDP candidate, Mr. Asue Ighodalo.”
They continued, “We are also in the process of examining documents related to the Ondo elections, where we suspect the APC engaged in result manipulation after openly buying votes.”
The governors urged the judiciary to safeguard Nigerian democracy, calling on the National Assembly to review electoral laws to prevent the systematic undermining of the people’s will.
Attendance
Attendees of the meeting included: Governors Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Barr. Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau) – the host governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas (Taraba), Hon. Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), H.E. Seyi Makinde (Oyo), and H.E. Dauda Lawal (Zamfara). Also present were Sir Monday Onyeme (Deputy Governor, Delta) and Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai (Deputy Governor, Enugu).
The PDP governors have also set a deadline for the National Working Committee (NWC) to convene a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting by February 2025.
