The Akure South chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the attack on its members during a ward meeting in Odopetu, Akure, allegedly by thugs loyal to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. during a peaceful Ward 7 meeting, leaving several PDP members injured.
Eyewitnesses claim the attackers, armed and numbering about 13, stormed the venue, chanting the APC governorship candidate’s slogan, “Odatiwa, odirorun,” before unleashing violence on the attendees. Party members were caught off guard, with some sustaining various degrees of injuries while others fled for safety.
The PDP described the assault as a cowardly and desperate act by a party “jittery about the rising popularity” of the PDP ahead of the November election. The party warned that such attacks threaten the peaceful conduct of the governorship election and called on the state governor to rein in his supporters.
In a statement signed by S. A. Ogedengbe, Secretary of the PDP Caretaker Committee in Akure South, the party urged members to remain calm, assuring them that the incident has been reported to the police and that steps are being taken to bring the perpetrators to justice. The party vowed not to be intimidated by the APC’s tactics, promising full protection for its members.
The PDP wished the injured a speedy recovery and reassured them of the party’s unwavering support.
