In a gesture of respect for the victims of a recent stampede in Ibadan, the South East People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has called off a planned birthday celebration for Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde in Ebonyi State.
Over 30 children lost their lives in the tragic incident during a funfair organized in Oyo State, prompting the party to cancel the event.
The celebration, set to take place at Re-Meritona Hotel in Abakaliki, was organized by PDP’s National Vice Chairman (South East), Chief Ali Odefa.
The event was also intended to unveil a book celebrating Governor Makinde’s leadership.
Former Ebonyi State Governor, Senator Sam Egwu, who was to chair the occasion, announced the decision, stating it was inappropriate to hold festivities during a period of mourning.
He assured that a new date for the event would be announced later.
Chief Ali Odefa expressed sorrow over the tragedy and instructed that all promotional materials for the event be removed.
Representing the governor, Prof. Emmanuel Echiegu conveyed condolences to the grieving families and thanked the organizers for their understanding.
The incident has dampened the festive mood in Oyo State, with sympathies pouring in from across the country.
