Medical and health workers in Oyo State are set to commence a seven-day warning strike on Monday to advocate for their demands.
Comrade John Fabunmi, Chairman of the Oyo State chapter of the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), announced this in Ibadan on Sunday.
Fabunmi stated that the strike would involve union members across all health institutions in the state, including those in ministries, departments, and local government councils.
He emphasized that the strike was necessary to press for their demands, noting that the union had repeatedly reminded the state government of their grievances without any response.
“One of our key demands is that the new hazard allowance be extended to all health workers in the state, not just those in hospitals,” Fabunmi said. “Additionally, we want our members who were removed from the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) to be reinstated, and those not yet included to be placed on CONHESS.”
Fabunmi highlighted that despite giving the state government a 14-day ultimatum, which expired on June 21, no action had been taken.
“In light of the ongoing situation and our members’ concerns, the union has decided to initiate a seven-day warning strike to draw the government’s attention to our demands,” he said. “Our members in all health institutions, ministries, and local governments will participate in the strike starting Monday, June 24.”
It is noteworthy that nurses and midwives in the state had already begun an indefinite strike on May 21, as directed by the state chapter of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM).
According to the union’s state Chairman, Adeyemi Samuel, the indefinite strike was also due to the state government’s failure to address their demands.
