The Oyo State Government has decided to drop the criminal charges against Naomi Silekunola, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife; Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, the owner of Agidigbo FM; and Abdullahi Fasasi, the principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan.
The case was linked to a tragic stampede during a children’s festive party in December 2024, which claimed the lives of at least 35 children.
The state had initially taken legal action, holding the trio accountable for the unfortunate incident.
Following the court proceedings on Thursday, the defendants appeared relieved, exchanging pleasantries with those around them.
The Attorney General of Oyo State, Abiodun Aikomo, later confirmed the government’s decision to withdraw the case.
He explained that while the incident led to a loss of lives, the defendants showed concern and compassion toward the affected families.
He further stated that the goal of prosecution is not to punish for the sake of it but to ensure justice.
Before this development, the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan had granted bail to Naomi, Hamzat, and Fasasi.
Justice Kamorudeen Olawoyin ruled that Naomi should provide N10 million and two sureties for her bail, while Hamzat and Fasasi were granted similar conditions.
The court also restricted them from public statements regarding the case and required them to submit their passports.
The case stemmed from the heartbreaking incident at Islamic High School, Bashorun, where a stampede during a children’s event led to numerous deaths.
The event left families mourning and the public deeply shaken. Initially, the government was determined to hold those involved accountable.
The prosecution argued against bail, citing the gravity of the charges. However, the defense pointed out that the accused had cooperated with authorities and were not at risk of fleeing.
Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier stated that those responsible should be prosecuted but was also open to the possibility of bail.
