The Oyo State House of Assembly has urged the state government to introduce regulations for large public gatherings to enhance safety and prevent future tragedies.
According to NAN, This resolution follows the December 18, 2024, stampede at a private children’s funfair in Ibadan, which resulted in multiple fatalities, mostly among children.
The motion, titled “Need for the Executive Arm of Government to Regulate Large Public Gatherings to Ensure Safety and Prevent Tragic Incidents,” was sponsored by Abiodun Babalola (PDP-Ibadan North-East 1) and co-sponsored by the Speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin (PDP-Ibarapa East).
Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, the assembly acknowledged the government’s swift intervention in providing medical aid to victims but stressed the necessity for stricter oversight and proactive measures to prevent similar occurrences.
Lawmakers highlighted that events attracting large crowds must undergo proper planning, including venue suitability assessments, crowd management strategies, and emergency preparedness. They warned that neglecting these precautions could lead to avoidable disasters like stampedes, causing unnecessary loss of lives.
The assembly referenced past incidents in Abuja and Anambra, underscoring the urgency for all levels of government to take preventive action.
Consequently, the House resolved that before hosting any public event expecting 500 or more attendees, organisers must ensure the venue meets safety and capacity standards, with approvals granted only upon fulfilling these requirements.
Additionally, it called on the executive arm to collaborate with the Ministry of Health to establish and enforce safety guidelines for event organisers, covering crowd management and emergency response protocols.
The lawmakers also emphasized that events involving minors should obtain permits from relevant authorities, while law enforcement agencies must ensure full compliance with safety regulations to prevent future tragedies.
Furthermore, the assembly directed its Committee on Women Affairs and Social Inclusion to work with relevant ministries to develop practical steps for implementing these safety measures and strengthening oversight of public gatherings.
