Oyetola Sets Up Special Committee to Address Boat Mishaps

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has established a special committee to examine the operations of commercial boat operators in coastal and inland waterways.

This initiative is aimed at tackling the persistent issue of boat mishaps across the country.

In a statement signed by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Anastasia Ogbonna, the committee’s formation follows a meeting held in Abuja with heads of agencies under the ministry.

During the meeting, Oyetola emphasised the urgency of the matter and the need for actionable solutions to minimise incidents.

The committee will be chaired by the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Bola Oyebamiji. Other members include:

  • Mr D. Mobereola, Director-General of NIMASA;
  • Prof S. Abiodun, Executive Director of NIOMR;
  • Dr A.M. Sule, Executive Director of NIFFR;
  • Dr B.D. Olaosebikan, Principal Officer of FCFFT;
  • Prof B. Fakinlede, Technical Adviser to the Minister; and
  • Mr A. Offie, Deputy Director of Inland Waterways, who will serve as Secretary.

The committee has been tasked with several objectives, including reviewing the current state of commercial boat operations, assessing safety and security compliance, and examining boat specifications against acceptable standards.

Additionally, the committee is expected to develop a comprehensive plan to enhance safety in boat transport, establish standard design specifications for commercial boats, and consider other measures necessary to ensure a secure and efficient waterway transport system.

The committee has been given a 21-day deadline to complete its work and present a detailed report to the ministry.
