Over 5,000 Nigerian Women Stranded in Iraq, Says NIDCOM Chair

Over 5,000 Nigerian women are currently stuck in Iraq, where they had traveled to work as caregivers, only to face harsh conditions upon arrival.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the head of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), shared this alarming information in Lagos during a seminar on diaspora investment opportunities, Vanguard reports.

Dabiri-Erewa detailed the tragic case of one woman who had been sent to Iraq by her husband, only to mysteriously die while working as a caregiver.

The Nigerian Mission is now involved in efforts to repatriate her body and investigate the cause of death.

Dabiri-Erewa also urged Nigerians to explore investment opportunities within their own country, rather than seeking work abroad.

She highlighted the growing trend of diaspora Nigerians, including African Americans, tracing their roots and returning to invest in Nigeria.

At the seminar, Dr. Godfrey Ajayi Sunday, from G-Consulting, discussed how over $100 million would be mobilized to help Nigerians engage in business ventures with diaspora support.

The event also aimed to discourage illegal migration and emphasize the wealth of opportunities available in Nigeria, from real estate to agriculture.
