Ondo Poll: NGO Raises Security Concerns in Five Local Government Areas

Kimpa Development Initiative (KDI) has expressed concerns about potential security issues in five local government areas of Ondo State as the governorship election approaches on Saturday.

The Executive Director of KDI, Mr. Bukola Idowu, highlighted these concerns during a pre-election press briefing held on Friday in Akure. The local government areas flagged include Akoko South-East, Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo, Ilaje, Ese-Odo, and Idanre.

“These are potential flashpoints that require the attention of security agencies for adequate deployment,” Idowu stated. “It is crucial to ensure that all processes in these areas are secure, well-coordinated, and of the highest standards.”

Idowu also praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its efforts in preparing for the election so far. “We are monitoring to see how these preparations will translate into effective execution on election day,” he added, noting that the focus is on four key areas of the electoral process.

He emphasized the need for security agencies to be vigilant about the post-election period. “We do not anticipate any violence, but it is important that any post-election issues are handled with professionalism and care,” Idowu advised. “Security agencies and stakeholders must be proactive in managing any potential challenges that may arise.”

Additionally, Idowu called for stricter measures to combat vote trading, acknowledging that current voter education efforts on this issue have not been entirely effective. He urged for more robust punitive actions to deter the practice and ensure a fair electoral process.
