Ondo Poll: More trouble for PDP as many chieftains plan to jump ship

The hope of reconciling the aggrieved members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) especially in Ondo South Senatorial District ahead of the October 10, governorship election is getting dimmer as many chieftains of the party are holding series of meetings with their followers to dump the PDP ahead of the governorship campaign which commences by September.

Starnews Nigeria gathered on Thursday night that some chieftains of the party including a former Speaker of Ondo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Jumoke Akindele and a former SSA on Infrastructure to former governor Olusegun Mimko, Engr Niyi Ogunwa (FCA), with their crop of followers are considering dumping the opposition PDP.

In a similar development, a dependable source also hinted our reporter on Friday morning that Hon. Niyi Adebusoye, a former member of the Ondo State House of Assembly from Okitipupa constituency I, is also part of the top PDP leaders who are considering dumping the PDP for another party.

Starnews Nigeria learnt that series of meetings had been held by the said group of PDP leaders most especially from Ilaje and Okitipupa Local Government respectively with the consideration by many of them to dump the party ahead of the election.

A chieftain of the party from Ilaje, who does not want to be quoted, told our reporter on Saturday that majority of the PDP leaders in Ilaje local government are already working for the ZLP to support Agboola Ajayi, the candidate of the party.

According to him: ”Please, don’t quote me. PDP is dead already in Ilaje local government. Most of our people believed we need a governor and not a deputy. As such, they are already working for the candidate of the ZLP even as PDP members.” the source hinted.

Recall that on August 20, 2020, Starnews Nigeria had reported that more than three thousand members of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ilaje local government area of Ondo State decamped to the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) ahead of the State governorship election.

The coming of the third force which is also known as the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) has thrown up more intrigues ahead of the October 10, 2020, election in Ondo State.

This latest planned defection by some top chieftains of the PDP in Ondo South might not be unconnected with the agitation for a southern governor, Starnews Nigeria can report.

However, our investigation has revealed that some of the chieftains of the PDP have not yet agreed on which political party to join between the ZLP and the ruling APC ahead of the state governorship election.
