The Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, has directed that an autopsy be carried out on the late Inspector Yusuf Suleiman Blessing.
This decision comes after the deceased officer’s family expressed doubts about the circumstances surrounding his death.
Yusuf was reported missing on January 27, 2025. A search was launched after he was last seen in the police station wearing a blue vest and green track pants.
Two days later, officers from the Marine Police discovered his body floating in a river.
The authorities informed his family and transferred the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further inquiry.
The police stated that an initial examination of the body revealed no visible injuries, except swelling on his head.
However, when the family received his remains for burial, they alleged that the body had been burnt, contradicting the official report that he drowned.
This led to calls for a deeper investigation.
At first, the family refused an autopsy and insisted on an immediate burial.
The police honored their request and covered the cost of transporting the body to Akure for burial.
However, due to the growing concerns raised by the family and the public, the Commissioner of Police has now ordered a full autopsy to establish the exact cause of death.
The police maintained that initial findings pointed to a case of sudden and unnatural death without any foul play, but the autopsy will provide a clearer picture of what truly happened.
