The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has announced its withdrawal from the Local Government elections scheduled for 18th January 2025, organised by the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC).
The decision was disclosed in a press statement signed by the party’s Director of Media and Publicity, Leye Igbabo, following extensive consultations with party leaders, stakeholders, and the National Secretariat of the PDP.
The party revealed it had initially fielded 15 chairmanship candidates across 15 local government areas and 131 councillorship candidates. However, it stated that ODIEC’s credibility, transparency, and impartiality had failed the integrity test.
“Recent observations and reports point to a troubling pattern of double standards by ODIEC, raising serious doubts about their ability to conduct a free, fair, and credible election,” the statement noted.
As a party committed to democracy and the rule of law, the PDP explained that participating in what it described as a compromised process would amount to conferring legitimacy on it.
“To uphold the integrity of our party and our unwavering belief in credible electoral practices, we have resolved to withdraw our participation in this exercise,” the statement added.
The party further assured its supporters and the people of Ondo State of its commitment to sanitising the electoral process and reinforcing the principles of credible elections.
