Ondo CP to remove over 200 Checkpoints Causing Traffic on Shagamu-Ore-Benin Road

The new Commissioner of Police (CP)in Ondo State, Oyediran Adesoye Oyeyemi, has moved to end unnecessary and unscrupulous police checkpoints along Shagamu,Ore and Benin road, which has continued to cause traffic jam, utmost pain and frustration to commuters and motorists plying the road.

THISDAY gathered that there are over 200 police checkpoints along the Shagamu, Ore and Benin highway. Travellers spend seven to 10 hours on this same road due to excessive and unnecessary checkpoints manned by police personnel at every single kilometre.

But CP Oyediran, who led top police officers from the command to Ore in Odigbo Local Government Area of the state yesterday has said indiscipline will never be allowed under his watch, stressing that henceforth, the road will be an easy passage for travelers.

He said: “We don’t want a situation where by travelers will suffer for several hours due to traffic jams. That is why we are here to talk to our men and restore sanity. The police will not tolerate indiscipline of any kind. So, any police officer caught blocking the road using the woods or whatsoever will never go unpunished.

“To sustain this, we will continue to visit these roads without giving them notice. Motorists plying this road should have a rest of mind that they are safe”.

He added that, there will be no room for extorting money from hardworking drivers and delaying the journey of innocent passengers on the road.

A motorist, Godwin Obongabasi while speaking with THISDAY lamented that the unnecessary delay while journeying on the road was solely due to the nefarious police/military checkpoints.
