Ondo Assembly Rejected Budget to Divert Funds for Election, Says PDP

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has accused the State House of Assembly of using the rejection of a N487.437 billion supplementary budget as a smokescreen to secretly mobilise funds for the upcoming governorship election.

This follows the Assembly’s decision to reject the budget proposal submitted by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, citing concerns over the poor implementation of the 2024 Appropriation Act, which reportedly saw less than 20% of the approved projects executed.

However, the PDP has raised alarm, suggesting that the legislators’ actions were a strategic front to deceive the public while planning to divert state funds for election-related expenses.

In a statement signed by the PDP State Publicity Secretary, Kennedy Ikantu Peretei on Friday, the party expressed suspicion over the timing of the budget request, coming just a month before the governorship polls.

“The rejection of the supplementary budget is nothing but a calculated attempt to give an impression of oversight, while in reality, the lawmakers and the Governor are working hand in hand to channel public money for their campaign,” the statement read.

The PDP also took a swipe at the Assembly, accusing it of turning a blind eye to the administration’s failure to properly implement the 2024 budget, yet suddenly showing concern with the supplementary request.

According to the opposition party, this selective scrutiny raises serious questions about the real motive behind the rejection.

The PDP called on the people of Ondo State to remain alert, warning that both the executive and legislative arms were involved in a scheme to exploit public resources for personal political gains ahead of the election.
