The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State, Hon. Agboola Ajayi, has blazed the trail by proving his vociferous critics wrong on the Channels TV’s Politics Today on Tuesday.
Agboola, a former Deputy Governor and a lawyer was said to be ineloquent and had been incessantly vituperated by some political aficionados for an unconscionable number of defects in his expressions.
However, Agboola, who, in the last 2023 General Election, emerged as the Senatorial Candidate of his party, lost out to Sen. Jimoh Ibrahim who is the Senator Representing Ondo South at the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly.
Ever since he was defeated, Agboola didn’t make any public appearance on the broadcast media until yesterday when he was interviewed during a current affairs programme on Channels TV moderated by Seun Okinbaloye.
Our Correspondent who monitored the programme, noted that while Ajayi was answering the questions posed to him by the Interviewer, he conducted himself with propriety and meticulously provided well-articulated answers.
It was gathered that Ajayi, as against the widely speculated grammatical deficiencies, spoke Impeccably yesterday without an iota of errors.
When he was asked to speak on why the former Candidate of the party, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede , did not contest; the former Ondo Deputy Governor said: “I was with him few days ago, he has the constitutional right, perhaps he considered the zoning arrangement.
Also when asked about his relationship with his former Boss (Akeredolu) he said, “It wasn’t bad… I worked with him as a deputy governor. We worked together at that time. I don’t want to talk about it, let’s allow the man to rest.”
“People know I have the capacity, Agboola Ajayi is a household name in Ondo State, I did my best as the Deputy Governor of my state. Politics is a dynamic game, like I said, I did the best I could do as Deputy Governor then.”
“If I am the Governor of Ondo State, I will do a different thing, I will keep my Deputy Governor busy. It doesn’t take anything away, rather it takes away my tension.
“If I am the Governor, I will strengthen the office of my Deputy“, he said.
Agboola added that, if the country’s laws are amended, it will help in quelling issues arising from the roles of deputy governors often called “spare tyres”.
“The National Assembly should do something about that, spell it out and define the constitutional role for the office of the governor and the vice presidential office”
“In that office, you can only function at the discretion of your principal and he assigns roles to you. If he feels like he does not want to play with you, that’s fine. But I think we should amend that aspect and give them a constitutional role to make them more relevant because it is a joint ticket.”
When asked what he meant by saying he has the capacity to govern Ondo State and that he should tell the world what he has in him to say that he has the capacity to govern, the eloquent Ajayi brilliantly said, “capacity, experience, and character are the legitimate weapons you put together that make a leader and I have them.
Saying, “I started politics at a very tender age. I was a ward chairman and later the secretary of my ward. I became a supervisory councillor twice, after which I became chairman of a caretaker committee in Ese-Odo local government.
Later, I was elected as the council chairman for another three years. I was elected to House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011. And then I became a deputy governor in Ondo State. I have a track record.
“As a matter of fact, with due respect to political leaders in Ondo State, I have never seen anybody who must have gotten through these stages and beat my credentials in Ondo politics”, he stated.
