Former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has said that ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar may soon leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Okowa made this known during a television interview on Tuesday, where he discussed the current state of the PDP and his own recent move to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Okowa explained that he had talks with Atiku before leaving the PDP. He said many members of the party are unhappy with the way things are going, especially as the 2027 general election draws near. According to him, Atiku has shown signs that he might be leaving the party soon, and this was part of the discussions they had before deciding to switch camps.
Speaking further, Okowa pointed out that the coalition Atiku is working on does not look promising. He said there seems to be no clear plan or strong structure for the coalition to succeed before the next elections. He believes it might be difficult for such a group to gain ground in time to compete.
On the issue of the 2027 presidency, Okowa said he supports President Bola Tinubu to continue in office. He argued that completing the eight-year cycle would allow for fairness in the rotation of power between the South and the North. According to him, this would help keep the country stable and united.
Okowa also talked about his reasons for leaving the PDP. He explained that it was not just his idea alone. He said the decision followed several meetings with political stakeholders in Delta State, including those who are not politicians. He claimed that they all agreed it was time to move to the APC.
He noted that even though he and others tried their best in the PDP, there were many missed chances to bring development to the state from the federal level. Okowa said joining the APC was seen as the best option to improve the future of the state and its people.
