Okonjo-Iweala Speaks Out on Meeting with President Tinubu

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the director general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), has revealed what transpired between her and President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa during her visit on Tuesday.

According to The Vanguard reports, Okonjo-Iweala while addressing state house correspondents after the meeting with the president, said the purpose of her visit was to channel how Nigerians can benefit more from the activities of the WTO.

 

According to the economist, the WTO has been working with some Nigerians, particularly women, in the area of trade, and manufacturing.

Speaking on the hardship in the country, the DG of the WTO maintained that President Tinubu is committed to better improvement in the lives of Nigerians.

Okonjo-Iweala noted that her visit to the president was not in the name of the WTO but said that the President has pledged to improve the well-being of Nigerians.

The WTO DG stated that her discussion with the president was around the formulation approach to strengthening women’s empowerment, fostering digital trade and bolster job creation to stimulate the Nigeria’s economy.

According to her, she was able to engage the president on the kind of programme that could be put in place to create jobs for the you and where the WTO can come in.

Earlier, President Bola Tinubu met with the DG of the World Trade Organisation at the presidential villa in Abuja on Tuesday.

The development came shortly after President Tinubu inaugurated a committee to reform the country’s tax system.

Earlier on Tuesday, the president constituted a presidential committee on fiscal policy and tax reform at the state house in Abuja.

President Tinubu has been keen on reforming the country’s economy since his emergence as President of Nigeria.

Okonjo-Iweala, on the other hand, is a known economic expert whom many experts have urged the president to work with, considering her position as DG of the WTO.
