Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the leading Igbo sociocultural group, has reiterated its support for the leadership of the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule.
According to Afripost, In a statement issued on Friday, January 24, by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Deputy President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the organization affirmed Amaewhule as the legitimate Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The group also urged Governor Sim Fubara to refrain from actions that could destabilize the state’s political environment and instead focus on promoting peace and unity in Rivers.
Ohanaeze commended the Assembly for its courageous decision to override the Governor’s veto on three vital bills: the Rivers State Education (Return of Schools) Amendment Bill, the Rivers Electricity Market Bill, and the Rivers State Commission of Inquiry Bill, 2024.
“These important bills, intended to improve the socio-economic well-being of all citizens, particularly the marginalized, were submitted to the Governor over a month ago. By overriding the veto in accordance with Section 100(6) of the Constitution, the legislators have upheld their constitutional obligations and reaffirmed the democratic principles that guide our governance,” the statement read.
The group expressed concern over Governor Fubara’s refusal to approve these bills, which were specifically crafted to address the pressing needs of the state’s disadvantaged populations.
“The House’s decision to override the veto is not only commendable but necessary, given the Governor’s apparent disregard for the needs of the people,” Ohanaeze stated.
In addition, Ohanaeze criticized the presentation of the 2025 Appropriation Bill by Governor Fubara to Victor Oko-Jumbo, Adolphus Timothy, and Sokari Goodboy, questioning their ability to effectively represent the public’s interests.
“These individuals, with questionable track records, should not be entrusted with legislative duties that demand a thorough understanding and unwavering commitment to the welfare of the people,” the group argued.
Ohanaeze also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his efforts to ensure a balanced political landscape in Rivers State, emphasizing the importance of preventing a “one-man show” under Governor Fubara’s administration.
The organization reiterated its strong support for Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, describing him as a symbol of hope and resilience in preserving Nigeria’s democracy.
The group condemned any attempts by the executive to encroach on the legislative branch’s authority, warning that such actions threaten democratic principles.
