The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNMW), Kaduna State branch has has called off its indefinite strike, which began on October 2, following successful negotiations with the Kaduna State Government.
The decision to suspend the strike was reached after a crucial meeting on Thursday, October 24, led by Deputy Governor Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe. During discussions with union representatives and senior government officials—including the Secretary to the State Government, the Head of Service, and the Commissioner of Health—the government assured its commitment to improving the welfare of health workers.
Governor Uba Sani has tasked the Labor Matters Committee, chaired by Dr. Balarabe, to fast-track discussions on the new minimum wage and to submit an actionable report within seven days.
The government also highlighted that health workers’ demands would be incorporated into the minimum wage negotiations, emphasizing its dedication to enhancing their working conditions.
In a circular signed by NANNMW’s Public Relations Officer and Acting Secretary, Comrade Yashi G. Nassa, the union directed all nurses and midwives to resume duties at noon on Friday, October 25, 2024.
The resolution of the strike is expected to bring much-needed stability to Kaduna’s healthcare sector, allowing health workers to resume providing essential services. The union has commended the government’s commitment to addressing issues through constructive dialogue, benefiting healthcare workers and the public alike.
