The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended 36 scavengers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for allegedly possessing illicit drugs and weapons. Olusola Odumosu, the NSCDC Commandant for the FCT, confirmed the arrests on Friday in Abuja, noting that the suspects were detained in various locations across the capital.
According to NAN, this development follows a directive from FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who recently imposed a two-week suspension on scavenger activities and banned pan-takers across the territory.
Odumosu revealed that among the items seized from the suspects were four daggers, three jack knives, two chisels, three knives, and illicit drugs, including ten bottles of codeine syrup and 45 wraps of cannabis sativa. Additionally, the suspects were found with trash bags and pieces of iron rods.
“The suspects are being thoroughly investigated, and we will ensure they face the law as required,” Odumosu assured.
He urged FCT residents to dispose of waste through designated waste management services rather than engaging with scavengers, commonly known as “Baba Nbola,” to protect their safety. The arrest of the suspects was part of ongoing efforts to address the rising issue of vandalism and theft of public assets such as streetlights, solar panels, and manhole covers.
Odumosu further warned that many of these scavengers, while appearing harmless, are often involved in criminal activities, including the destruction of public infrastructure. “They may seem harmless, but their true intentions are criminal,” he said, adding that such activities have led to the injury and death of innocent people.
Investigations have also uncovered that some scavengers work as informants for criminals, using the waste they collect to profile individuals based on their social status and lifestyle. “They assess the type of waste you dispose of, which can reveal personal details about your life,” Odumosu explained.
The NSCDC Commandant appealed to residents to work with security agencies to rid the FCT of these criminal elements. “Whenever you see scavengers in your neighborhood or on your streets, please chase them away and report any suspicious activities,” Odumosu urged.
The NSCDC continues to prioritize the safety and security of the FCT through active engagement and enforcement efforts.
