No Sharia Court In Ekiti – Government

The Ekiti State Government has stated that its judicial system does not recognize Sharia Courts or independent Sharia Arbitration Panels.

This clarification came after reports about the recent public sittings of the Ekiti Sharia Panel, which settled marriage disputes based on Islamic principles.

Attorney General Dayo Apata highlighted that the state already has established courts, including Customary Courts, Customary Court of Appeal, and High Courts, which address marriage and inheritance matters for Islamic, Christian, and traditional practices.

He added that these systems have functioned without conflict, making additional arbitration bodies unnecessary.

The government warned against activities that could disrupt the peace in the state and urged religious leaders to avoid being influenced by political motives.

Apata reiterated that legal matters, including arbitration, are regulated under the law, ensuring that all disputes are resolved within the framework of the existing judicial system, Punch reports.

The statement also acknowledged the growing political tension ahead of the 2026 governorship elections, urging residents to focus on unity and peace.
