NIS Introduces Contactless Passport Application Today

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has officially launched its contactless passport application system in Europe, the United Kingdom, and Ireland as part of ongoing reforms initiated by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

According to Topnewspaper, In a statement released on Wednesday, NIS spokesperson AS Akinlabi confirmed that the new system, which became operational on February 7, 2025, allows Nigerians living abroad to apply for or renew their passports entirely online, eliminating the need for physical visits to passport offices.

NIS Comptroller General Kemi Nanna Nandap highlighted the significance of this initiative during a visit to the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in Abuja. She emphasized that the digital system is designed to streamline the passport renewal process and enhance service efficiency for Nigerians overseas.

According to the NIS, this latest rollout follows the successful implementation of the contactless passport application in Canada on November 5, 2024.

“The contactless passport application, now available on the Google Play Store under ‘NIS Mobile,’ enables Nigerians to renew their passports remotely, without requiring biometric enrollment at a passport center,” the statement read.

Reaffirming its commitment to innovation and improved service delivery, the NIS described the new system as a major step toward making passport processing more accessible and efficient for Nigerians worldwide.

NiDCOM’s Abike Dabiri-Erewa welcomed the initiative, calling it a significant breakthrough for Nigerians in the diaspora.

“This development represents a crucial step toward a more seamless and secure passport management system for our citizens abroad,” she stated. “NiDCOM is fully committed to supporting and collaborating with the NIS to ensure its success.”

  1. How will this work when the physical one failed. I applied for passport since July 2024 and up till now I have not gotten my passport. What about when you want to collect it, is it contactless? If you ask me, if Nigerians are involve, with our attitudes, contactless will be meaningless and successless.
