Nigerians from different quarters have called for the dissolution of the Board of Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), over the mass failure of students in the Professional final nursing examination of 2024 academic session.
Starnews NG gathered that many students in nursing schools failed the Professional final examination for 2024 academic session.
Findings by Starnews NG revealed that nursing students nationwide were affected by the mass failure, which according to some students was due to the unprofessional conduct by the board, (NMCN).
Some affected students in Delta State School of Nursing Agbor, who spoke anonymously to Starnews NG, disclosed the reasons for the nationwide mass failure.
They accused the council of changing exam date and venue without prior notice.
According to some students in Agbor, the examination that should hold in the school campus was conducted in Abraka. “We supposed to write our exam in Agbor but we were asked to go and write the exam in Abraka without a well circulated prior notice,” he said.
The students also complained about the malfunctioning of computer systems at Abraka campus without rectification.
“Our exam is CBT. There was a shortage of system operators to attend to students whose systems were malfunctioning. The majority of us faced system malfunctioning without rectification until we all ran out of time, amid several complaints without rectification,” some students lamented.
The students also alleged that they were subjected to physical and mental stress which was not part of their school curriculum. “Funny enough, we were subjected to physical and mental stress, which is not part of our school curriculum. We wrote part A and B of one single exam on different days, is that not funny?”, one of them said.
Reacting to the posted image of the results on Instagram, Nigerians have expressed displeasure over the mass failure, stating that urgent action must be taken to salvage the situation.
Queen_Bee said, “All the lecturers should be questioned if their students are failing.”
In another comment, naturalloveofficial said “These students voices need to be heard. There’s more to this.”
Thegr8valyntino stated that “Having a mass failure means that the school has poor teaching methods or ineffective school leadership or administration. Regulatory bodies should do something about this.”
Meanwhile, Starnews NG reports that the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), is a parastatal of the Federal Government of Nigeria established by Act Cap. No 143 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
The Council is the only regulatory body for all cadres of Nurses and Midwives in Nigeria.
The primary objectives of the Council are to ensure the high quality of Nursing and Midwifery education in Nigeria, maintain a high standard of professional practice and enforce discipline within the profession.
Broadly, the functions are related to those of designing, implementing and evaluating various nursing educational programmes, of indexing, examination, monitoring standards of Nursing practice in the Country, registration, certification, and license of professional Nurses.
