The Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Ondo, Rt Revd Latunji Lasebikan, has called on Nigerian leaders to set aside their selfish interests and prioritise the well-being of the nation and its people.
He urged leaders to make personal sacrifices, rather than betraying the electorate and the country.
Speaking in Ondo, Lasebikan emphasised the need for leaders with integrity and character, highlighting the pervasive selfishness among those in power.
He lamented that many leaders are surrounded by sycophants who fail to tell them the truth.
“The main obstacle to Nigeria’s progress is selfishness,” Lasebikan stated.
“If we are to move forward as a nation, this selfishness must be set aside. Everything these leaders do revolves around self-interest.”
He criticised the extravagant lifestyles of leaders amid widespread poverty and hardship.
“At a time when people are suffering, with poverty and hardship everywhere, leaders are buying jets and expensive vehicles, yet they ask the people to make sacrifices. It’s madness,” he remarked, adding that such behaviour reflects a deeper issue within the leadership.
The Bishop expressed his belief that despite these challenges, God would intervene on behalf of the poor and oppressed in Nigeria.
Lasebikan also noted that many leaders have failed the church, which they are supposed to represent.
“It’s unfortunate that those who go into politics often fail to represent the church or the people who voted them in. They pursue their selfish interests instead, which is why we don’t feel their impact,” he said.
He called on the church to take a more active role in holding its members accountable in leadership positions, ensuring that they represent the interests of both the church and the people.
