The Nigerian Army has addressed the detention of a Point of Sale (POS) operator, Nansak Selbar, in Plateau State, linking him to kidnapping and terrorism-related offenses, including handling ransom payments for criminal groups.
According to Vanguard, in a statement issued by Lt. Col. Aliyu Danja, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, the Army dismissed rumors suggesting that Major General Nansak Shagaya could face a N100 million sanction for Selbar’s alleged illegal detention. The Army described these reports as inaccurate and misleading.
According to the Army, Selbar’s arrest followed evidence linking him to kidnapping operations, where he reportedly facilitated ransom transactions. Investigations also uncovered his alleged involvement in other illegal activities, such as supplying military uniforms to bandits and defrauding individuals under the guise of Army recruitment.
The Army confirmed that Selbar’s detention was authorized by a court order under the provisions of the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act (TPPA) 2022. This legal process allows the Army to detain him for further investigation before transferring the case to the appropriate authorities for prosecution.
The Army firmly denied that Major General Shagaya influenced Selbar’s arrest, stressing that all actions were conducted in compliance with the law.
Additionally, the Army criticized the claims made by Alex Giwa in a widely circulated article, describing them as unfounded and designed to damage the Army’s reputation and stir public distrust.
The Army warned against the dangers of spreading false information, emphasizing that it could create unnecessary tension and undermine trust between the public and security forces.
“We encourage media organizations and content creators to verify their information before publication to avoid misleading the public,” the statement read.
Reiterating its commitment to public safety, the Army called on citizens to support its efforts by providing reliable intelligence to help combat criminal activities.
“The 3 Division Nigerian Army is dedicated to ensuring the safety of lives and property. We urge communities to partner with us in eliminating criminal elements and promoting peace,” the statement concluded.
