The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has officially implemented a 4% charge on the Free-On-Board (FOB) value of imports.
According to Afripost, NCS spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada confirmed this development in a statement released on Wednesday, highlighting that the move aligns with the provisions of the Nigeria Customs Service Act (NCSA) 2023.
Under Section 18 (1) of the NCSA 2023, the newly introduced charge will apply to the total value of imported goods, factoring in their cost and transportation expenses up to the port of loading. The NCS emphasized that this charge is essential for the continued efficient functioning of the service.
In response to concerns from stakeholders regarding the ongoing collection of the 1% Comprehensive Import Supervision Scheme (CISS) fee, the NCS clarified that this fee will continue to fund the Nigeria Destination Inspection Scheme, alongside the newly implemented FOB charge.
The NCS assured the public that consultations with the Federal Ministry of Finance are ongoing to address any concerns. The service also urged all stakeholders to adhere to the new directive, emphasizing that it was introduced after careful discussions with relevant parties. The NCS expressed gratitude for the continued support and collaboration of stakeholders in the successful implementation of the NCSA 2023.
