Newly constructed Pedestrian bridge collapses in Lagos

Danger was on Thursday averted as the newly constructed pedestrian bridge at Five Stars Bus Stop, inward Iyana-Isolo, along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, area of Lagos, partly collapsed in the early hours.

According to an eye-witness, the incident happened in the early hours at about 6.30 am. It took the prompt intervention of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, to save the situation.

Upon arrival of LASEMA team, part of the pedestrian bridge had fallen with some portions shutting down half of the expressway.

According to investigations conducted by the LASEMA, the incident was caused by an unknown articulated truck conveying heavy duty equipment which collided with the pedestrian bridge which resulted in the cracks and eventual collapse of the bridge.

Permanent Secretary, LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, said heavy-duty equipment-giant forklift was activated to evacuate the impediment in order to avert all probable secondary incidents.

“The entire bridge had been cordoned-off by the agency’s Response Team.

Decommissioning efforts of the remaining concrete members of the pedestrian bridge has been kick-started to ensure public safety,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
