As the Federal Government owned Port Harcourt Refinery began crude oil production on Tuesday after several postponements, Nigerians have taken to social media to react to the news.
While some described it as a welcome development, others expressed reservations about the numerous delays.
Earlier on Tuesday, the spokesperson of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Olufemi Soneye, disclosed that the Port Harcourt Refinery had commenced crude oil processing.
According to Soneye, the refinery has started with 60 percent capacity, processing 60,000 barrels of crude oil per day.
Reacting on social media, Godwin Captain Kalu said, “Let’s clap for the refinery.”
In his view, Akapo Sunday commented, “Let the first truck come out with product and let us confirm that it was the refined product from that nozzle of Port Harcourt Refinery that produced it. Then I can believe, because anyone who believes this APC government does so at his peril.”
Salawu Temitayo Oluwaseun reacted, “The question is, why is the refinery starting operation now after so many years and at a time when a private individual had started operation from his private facility? Hopefully, it has come to stay if it’s not about politics and conflict in prices.”
Walshak Kos responded, saying, “After a few weeks, we will start hearing stories of how a snake crawled in and swallowed the refinery generator. Then the refinery will finally shut down.”
On his part, MC Funnylips replied, “If the fuel will still be sold at ₦950, then it means the refinery is not working 😔.”
Libright Dans Chibedum sarcastically said, “Any regime that will fix that refinery will have a lot of work to do. Believe me, as far as this regime is concerned, if anything liquid comes from any of those nozzles, know it’s H2O (water). Three people in this regime you can’t trust: one from Lagos, one from Rivers, and one from Ebonyi; trust these three gang 🤔 at your own peril.”
Nura Tasiu exclaimed, “Dangote has given you the tougher competitive environment. Nice one.”
Enoch Olatunji exclaimed, “Great news. But does this change the cost of fuel? ⛽”
Obosi Monday Omeiza Michael responded, “What is now the good news about this? Does it in any way affect the lives of Nigerians positively?”
Badmus Blessing stated, “This is a good development. Tinubu is turning things around gradually.”
Osobase O. Joshua responded, “Have they told the refinery that it has started working? 🤗🤗🤗”
Bldr Bright Anthony questioned, “Is it technically or is it actually working? Because anything in this country no dey pass technically. Nah so dem first say dey don technically defeat Boko Haram.”
Jacobson Umanah questioned, “Is it really fuel production or fuel importation? Funny people!”
Temitope Osagbemi expressed optimism, saying, “Hope to see the positive effects on our day-to-day activities.”
