The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a warning stating that at least fourteen states in Nigeria are at high risk of experiencing heavy flooding during the upcoming 2023 rainy season. NEMA, the federal government agency responsible for disaster management, released a statement on Wednesday revealing that thirty-one communities across these states may face torrential downpours and subsequent flooding between July 4 and 8.
In an announcement signed by Ibrahim Farinloye, the Territorial Coordinator of NEMA’s Lagos Territorial Office, relevant stakeholders within the affected states have been urged to take immediate precautionary measures to protect lives and properties.
NEMA also expressed its appreciation to the Flood Early Warning System (FEWS) Central Hub of the Federal Ministry of Environment in Abuja for sharing vital information regarding the potential flooding.
The states and communities listed as susceptible to flooding are as follows:
Plateau: Langtang, Shendam
Kano: Sumaila, Tudun wada
Sokoto: Shagari, Goronyo, Silame
Delta: Okwe
Kaduna: Kachia
Akwa Ibom: Upenekang
Adamawa: Mubi, Demsa, Song, Mayo-belwa, Jimeta, Yola
Katsina: Katsina, Jibia, Kaita, Bindawa
Kebbi: Wara, Yelwa, Gwandu
Zamfara: Shinkafi, Gummi
Borno State: Briyel
Jigawa: Gwaram
Kwara: Jebba
Niger: Mashegu, Kontagora
The NEMA statement emphasizes the need for residents in these areas to remain vigilant and prepared for potential flooding. It is crucial for them to adhere to safety guidelines and cooperate with local authorities and emergency response teams. By taking preventive actions, such as relocating to safer grounds, securing valuable belongings, and avoiding areas prone to flooding, the residents can significantly mitigate the risks associated with the heavy rainfall.
The government, along with NEMA and other relevant agencies, is actively monitoring the situation and will provide necessary assistance and support to the affected states and communities. Efforts are underway to enhance emergency response capabilities, including early warning systems, to ensure the safety and well-being of the population during this challenging period.
