A recent interception by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) thwarted an attempt to smuggle 175,000 bottles of codeine-based syrup from India into Nigeria.
According to NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi, the seizure took place during a joint examination with customs and other security agencies in Abuja last Friday. This interception closely follows another seizure of the same substance—175,000 bottles—at the Port Harcourt Port complex in Onne, Rivers state, just a week prior.
Babafemi noted that both seizures were prompted by earlier intelligence, leading to a comprehensive examination of the shipments. The latest seizure, totaling 875 cartons of codeine-containing bottles, weighed 26,250kg.
In a separate incident, NDLEA officers intercepted five parcels containing illicit drugs disguised within ladies’ clothes and synthetic hair en route to the United States and United Kingdom. The seized drugs included 620 ampoules of pentazocine injection, promethazine, and other opioids, confiscated from a courier firm in Lagos on Wednesday, June 5.
