The Kogi State chapter of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the arrest of 149 suspects and the seizure of over 1.49 tonnes of illicit drugs between January 1 and June 24.
This announcement was made by the Kogi NDLEA commander, Umar Yahuza, during a press conference held on Monday in Lokoja. The event kicked off a week-long observance of the United Nations Day against Drug Abuse and Trafficking in the state.
Yahuza highlighted that the initiative is a joint effort between the NDLEA and the Kogi state government. He also noted that 29 of the 149 arrested suspects have been convicted, while legal proceedings for the others are ongoing at the Federal High Court in Lokoja.
“The drug menace in Kogi and Nigeria is disturbing and demands urgent action to prevent it from destroying our youths and future leaders,” Yahuza stated. He emphasized the severe implications of drug abuse on security, economics, and the general well-being of citizens.
Yahuza detailed the agency’s efforts, mentioning the seizure of various drugs including codeine, methamphetamine, diazepam, tramadol, cannabis sativa, and pentazocine. He underscored that the drug problem is evolving into a significant social issue, contributing to increased insecurity and its negative impact on peace and the economy nationwide.
He linked the rise in armed robbery, kidnapping, banditry, rape, and other violent crimes to the use of illicit drugs, noting, “Illicit drugs are often the catalyst for these vices; wherever there are drugs, there is crime and vice versa.”
Yahuza stressed that Kogi, as a representation of Nigeria and a federating unit, cannot tackle the challenges of drug abuse and trafficking alone. He mentioned that since January 1, the command has carried out numerous operations, awareness campaigns, and courtesy visits to address the issue.
He called for collaboration from government bodies, corporations, and individuals to help eliminate the scourge of drugs from society. Yahuza also expressed gratitude to Governor Usman Ododo’s administration for its steadfast support in enabling the agency to perform its duties effectively in the state.
Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Monday Anyebe, commended the NDLEA for its dedication to combating illicit drugs in Kogi and across Nigeria. Anyebe highlighted Governor Ododo’s concern for the welfare of Kogi’s youth and emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse, which predominantly affects younger generations.
“Investing in prevention is the most effective way to address drug abuse and addiction in society,” Anyebe stated. “By investing in preventive measures, we can empower the younger generations with the knowledge, skills, and support they need to make informed decisions about their health and well-being, contributing to the growth and development of the country.”
