Lawyers in Owerri, Imo State, have called for a one-week suspension of activities at the Justice Oputa High Court due to safety concerns.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Owerri branch, raised alarms over structural issues in the court building, which was constructed during former Governor Rochas Okorocha’s administration.
The NBA chairman, Chris Ihentuge, informed lawyers and litigants on Friday that the building had been shaking during court sessions.
He revealed that two judges, including Justice Onyeukwu, had recently reported similar experiences.
Concerns about the court’s structural integrity have been ongoing even before it was put to use.
Despite multiple complaints, no action has been taken.
Ihentuge insisted that court activities should be halted for a week until experts assess the building’s safety.
In addition to safety concerns, the lawyers also criticized the lack of a Chief Judge in Imo State for nearly three months.
They argued that the absence of leadership has worsened problems in the judiciary, leaving unresolved issues such as poor lighting, inadequate ventilation, and general neglect of court facilities.
There are also claims that the building was originally designed as a hotel before being converted into a court, which may have contributed to its structural flaws.
The NBA has urged authorities to take immediate action to prevent any potential disaster.
