The Nigerian Navy has handed over 72 bags of cannabis sativa, each weighing 40 kg, and four suspects to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Marine Command.
The handover, which included three Ghanaians and one Beninois, was detailed in a statement by Lt. Hussaini Ibrahim, the base information officer of Nigerian Navy Ship, NNS, BEECROFT, on Tuesday.
The interception occurred on August 25, thanks to the efforts of the Quick Response Team. Commodore Rafiu Oladejo, represented by Executive Officer Mutalib Raji, explained that the operation was based on reliable intelligence regarding suspicious activities around the Lekki Beach area.
The deployment of the team led to the seizure of the cannabis, totaling over 2,880 kg. This action aligns with the strategic directive of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, to maintain a secure maritime environment conducive to economic activities.
“Interestingly, the team also arrested three Ghanaians: Godswill Zevor, Monday Kpomeja, Gbega Agbeko and a Beninois, Elugbe Philip.
“Perpetrators of illicit drugs are warned to desist from such acts as NNS BEECROFT will continue to pursue every criminal element operating within its area of operation.
“This successful operation is a testament to the unrelenting efforts of NNS BEECROFT to curtail the spread and use of illicit drugs among teeming youths, which negatively affect their health and threaten national security,” he said.
