The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Nigeria’s non-teaching university staff, comprising the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), has announced a nationwide strike set to commence on the night of 27 October 2024.
The indefinite action, rooted in grievances over four months of unpaid salaries, represents a coordinated effort to address prolonged delays in salary disbursements.
Initially scheduled for 23 October, the strike was postponed to allow for a Trade Group Council meeting of NASU branches, held at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria.
This shift aims to ensure all branches are aligned, reinforcing unity across both unions.
Despite President Bola Tinubu’s prior approval for a partial release of the withheld salaries, union leaders express frustration over what they view as stalled efforts from the Ministry of Finance, questioning the government’s responsiveness.
NASU and SSANU have reiterated their commitment to the cause, determined to maintain pressure until all withheld salaries are addressed.
The circular read in part:
“It is on record that the JAC of NASU and SSANU has issued multiple notices to the government to redress this ugly situation. However, the sincerity of the government to our cause is in doubt.
“In view of this, the leadership of JAC has decided that the effective date for the strike be moved to midnight on Sunday, 27 October 2024, to allow the Branch Officers of NASU to be on the ground before commencing the strike.
“We have to make this strategic change in timing for effective coordination and for both unions to be on the same page.”
