The National Assembly has postponed sending the minimum wage bill to President Bola Tinubu, now aiming to transmit it by Monday.
Initially set for transmission on Thursday after passing through second and third readings in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, the bill has yet to reach the presidency for final approval.
Senator Abdullahi Gumel, Senior Special Assistant on National Assembly Matters, confirmed the delay on Saturday, as reported by The PUNCH. He explained that the postponement was due to the N6.2 trillion 2024 Appropriation bill and the incomplete Finance bill.
“The Appropriation committees needed to finalize a few details, so it didn’t make sense to transmit the Minimum Wage bill without the necessary financial bills to support it,” Gumel stated.
Gumel also noted that the leadership of the National Assembly plans to personally deliver the bills to the president, either over the weekend or by Monday.
President Tinubu had previously sent the Minimum Wage Bill to the National Assembly, proposing an amendment to the National Minimum Wage Act 2019 to increase the minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000.
Additionally, following an agreement with labor leaders, he requested that the review period for the national minimum wage be reduced from five years to three years.
