NANS Protests Exclusion from NELFUND Board Meeting

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has objected to its exclusion from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) board meeting.

The student body is demanding immediate inclusion in the meeting and has warned that it will disrupt the gathering if this demand is ignored.

In a letter dated February 13, 2025, addressed to NELFUND’s Managing Director, Akintunde Sawyerr, and Board Chairman, Jim Ovia, NANS President, Lucky Emonefe, expressed dissatisfaction with the continued lack of student representation.

He stated that students, as direct beneficiaries of the loan scheme, should have a voice in decisions affecting them.

NANS insisted that without a student representative, the meeting will not hold, as they are prepared to mobilize for a complete shutdown of the venue.

President Bola Tinubu had signed the Student Loans Act in April 2024, establishing the NELFUND board with representatives from government agencies, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders.

However, NANS maintained that students must be directly involved in shaping policies related to education funding.
