After the passing of Pope Francis at the age of 88, attention has now turned to who will take over as the new leader of the Catholic Church.
Cardinals from around the world are gathering in Rome for the Papal Conclave, a secret meeting where the next Pope will be chosen.
Several well-known Church figures are being talked about as possible successors, each bringing different experiences, views, and cultural backgrounds.
One of the names being discussed is Peter Turkson, a 76-year-old cardinal from Ghana. He came close to becoming Pope in 2013 and could now make history as the first Black Pope.
Turkson has taken a balanced approach on social matters, showing concern over harsh laws in Africa against LGBTQ+ people, while also respecting local customs.
Luis Antonio Tagle, a 67-year-old from the Philippines, is another top contender.
He once led the Church in Manila and is seen as a favorite among those who want change.
Tagle has pushed for a more caring approach to divorced people and members of the LGBTQ+ community. If chosen, he would become the first Pope from Asia.
Pietro Parolin, currently the Vatican’s Secretary of State, is also being considered. At 70, he is known for keeping to tradition but has drawn criticism over his involvement in a Vatican deal with China in 2018.
Some also recall his past remarks opposing same-sex marriage.
Peter Erdo, a 72-year-old from Hungary, represents the conservative side of the Church.
He is against giving communion to Catholics who remarry after divorce. If elected, he would be the second Pope from the former Eastern Bloc.
Another possibility is Jose Tolentino de Mendonça, who is 59 and from Portugal.
Though the youngest among the group, he has served in many Vatican roles.
He believes in connecting the Church with modern life and encourages discussions on current cultural topics.
Matteo Zuppi, aged 69, is known for his peace efforts, including work in Ukraine. He is the Archbishop of Bologna and was made a cardinal by Pope Francis in 2019. Many see him as a kind leader with a deep interest in promoting peace.
Mario Grech from Malta, 68, is also in the running. He has backed Pope Francis’s work in making the Church more open to all people. Grech has called for the use of more welcoming language when talking about LGBTQ+ people and those who are divorced.
Robert Sarah, 79, is another candidate, though his age may work against him. He is from French Guinea and has had top positions in the Vatican. Known for his strong views, Sarah is against modern gender topics and has been firm on traditional beliefs.
