Chief Celestine Okoye, a retired Deputy Inspector General of Police from Anambra State, has claimed that he is facing threats from suspected cultists in his hometown of Awka.
This follows his refusal to assist in securing bail for their detained members.
Awka has been plagued by violence from rival cult groups, with several members currently in police custody.
Okoye raised concerns about increasing kidnappings in the city, particularly in the Dubai Estate area, which he described as a high-risk zone.
The threats against Okoye reportedly surfaced after he declined to intervene in the cases of arrested cult members.
He lamented that influential figures in Awka are allegedly supporting cultists and kidnappers, exacerbating the area’s security issues.
Okoye highlighted recent kidnappings, including that of a newly-married couple, with a ransom demand of N30 million.
He expressed frustration over the deteriorating security situation in Awka, criticizing the state government, security agencies, and parents for failing in their responsibilities.
He also noted that security issues in Anambra State are being politicized. Okoye recalled an attempted meeting with Governor Chukwuma Soludo to discuss security concerns and offer advice, which was canceled at the last minute and has yet to be rescheduled.
Additionally, Okoye criticized parents for their role in hindering police investigations, citing instances where families of cultists quickly bury bodies without informing the police, thus obstructing investigations.
In contrast, he praised Nnewi for its organized local security system, including street cameras, which has improved its security situation.
Chief Chikodi Anarah, the Anambra State Commissioner for Homeland Matters, responded by stating that the state is actively addressing security issues through 24-hour operations and arrests.
He emphasized the need for cooperation from top individuals in Awka and noted that the state government has previously sought collaboration with Awka’s leadership to tackle insecurity.
