The Chairman of Egor Local Government Area, Eghe Ogbemudia, has dismissed claims of her impeachment alongside her vice, Franco Osawe, by some councillors.
In a statement issued on Friday night, Ogbemudia described the alleged impeachment as unconstitutional, attributing it to external influences seeking unlawful access to the council’s treasury.
According to her, the claims of impeachment have no legal foundation, and she has never violated any laws governing local administration or received any official query from the councillors.
“I am a democrat and a firm believer in the rule of law,” she stated. “I have never obstructed nor interfered with the constitutional duties of the councillors. This so-called impeachment was carried out by a minority group and lacks any basis in the Constitution of Nigeria.”
She urged the residents of Egor Local Government Area to remain calm, maintain peace, and disregard the actions of what she referred to as “a minority group of councillors acting unlawfully.”
Ogbemudia further alleged that the purported impeachment was orchestrated by individuals with ulterior motives, intent on plunging the local government into crisis for their personal gain.
“Since assuming office, I have strictly adhered to the laws of the local government, the state, and the Constitution of Nigeria. There has been no query from any councillor or authorized body requiring my response,” she asserted.
The chairman reiterated her commitment to upholding the Constitution and affirmed that she has no intention of overstepping the powers of the councillors. She concluded by emphasizing that the alleged impeachment was a ploy to gain unprincipled access to public funds.
