The family of the late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad, has recently carried out a new autopsy to investigate the cause of his death.
According to The PUNCH, on June 26, Magistrate T.A. Shotobi of the Coroner Court in Ikorodu, Lagos State, authorized Mr. Joseph Aloba, Mohbad’s father, to arrange for an independent autopsy by a licensed pathologist. The court stipulated that Aloba would bear all associated costs.
On Tuesday, Monisola Odumosu, a member of the family’s legal team, announced that the autopsy was conducted on July 19 and 20. Odumosu noted that if the autopsy did not establish the cause of death, additional toxicology and histology tests would be carried out on the samples.
“The second autopsy, requested by the Aloba family and ordered by Magistrate T.A. Shotobi, took place on July 19 and 20, 2024. The procedure was conducted in two parts, with the first part completed. Should the initial examination fail to determine the cause of death, further toxicology and histology tests will be conducted,” the statement said.
The legal team also confirmed that Mohbad’s father and two separate pathologists—one appointed by him and another by Mohbad’s wife, Wunmi—observed the procedure.
“This thorough examination was conducted last Friday and was witnessed by Mr. Joseph Aloba, a forensic pathologist appointed by him, legal representatives of Mr. Aloba, and a pathologist designated by Wunmi Aloba,” the statement added.
Mohbad, who was 27, passed away on September 12, 2023, under circumstances that triggered significant controversy online. A former artist with Marlian Music, owned by Naira Marley, Mohbad had left the label in February 2022. Following his death, the Lagos State Police Command formed a 13-man special investigation team on September 18, 2023, to investigate the matter.
His death led to the arrests of Naira Marley and Lagos socialite Balogun Eletu, also known as Sam Larry, among others. Mohbad’s body was exhumed on September 21, 2023, for an initial autopsy, but a pathologist testified on May 15 that the cause of death could not be determined due to decomposition.
Further complicating the investigation, a US-based lab later denied claims from the Lagos State Government that a toxicology test had been conducted there. Esther Dede, Client Services Associate at NMS Labs, stated, “Unfortunately, we do not have a case for that patient.”
