Military Junta Places Gabon President Under House Arrest

 

Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba is under house arrest and one of his sons has been arrested for “treason.”

The military officers made this known on Wednesday, hours after announcing they had overthrown the government.

“President Ali Bongo is under house arrest, surrounded by his family and doctors,” they said in a statement read out on state TV.

Starnews reports that army officers in Gabon have announced seizure of power after the third term re-election of President Ali Bongo on Saturday.

The top army officers made the announcement on Tuesday.

The officers reportedly said they were annulling the outcome of Saturday’s election which the opposition had rejected and described as “fraudulent.”
