A tragic incident has rocked Ekebeligwe Ishieke community in Ebonyi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, where a man with mental health issues, identified as Godwin Nwibo, has reportedly murdered his father, Lazarus Nwibo.
Godwin, aged 30, allegedly strangled his elderly father while they were both asleep in their home. The incident occurred in the early hours of August 3, 2024.
According to a neighbour, Mr Benjamin Nwogha, Godwin had shown signs of mental illness since January of this year. Concerned family members sought treatment for him at a local herbal home. Despite this intervention, Godwin escaped from the centre about six months later and returned to his family’s residence.
Neighbours discovered the grim scene when they were alerted that Lazarus had not responded to calls. Upon forcing open the door, they found the elderly man dead and Godwin lying beside him. The presence of blood from Lazarus’s mouth suggested he had been strangled.
DSP Joshua Ukandu, the Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the report and stated that investigations are underway. The deceased has been taken to a mortuary, and Godwin remains in police custody as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crime.
